Welcome. Here are suggestions for police regional restructuring which aim to:
- Offer workable police regions which meet the governments wish to amalgamate the 43 existing authorities into 12 larger units to achieve cost savings.
- Build on ‘common sense’ in a regional structure allowing the police to create local forces which respect national heritage, identity and geography
- To lay the foundations of an enhanced regional framework for the country
- To dismiss governments unreasonable logic that 12 new authorities can be effectively created from the 9 regions [which must follow existing regional boundaries, while not be too discordant in size]
The white paper ‘Closing the gap’ guidelines advise new forces which are not co-terminus with the current regional framework would need very good reasons to be approved. I suggest that a reorganisation along the suggested provincial framework might yield greater economic and structural benefits for forces as all would be serving similar population numbers, all would embrace only one dominant city [a more equal distribution of ‘high risk’ and ‘low risk’ areas] and all would be of a similar geographic size. Such parity between forces would benefit performance comparison between forces and assist in the transition of ‘best practice’ from one force to another.

The commission here is to chart clear improvements over the current regional map for each of the goals below. To replace current 9 regions, a total of 12 ‘provinces’ are proposed [left links or right map]. These will embrace better balance of ‘people and place’ and elevate the status of all our main cities. The suggestions here aim to stimulate debate about how we might enhance our sense of local identity- please note that I wish only to encourage a benevolent platform for sharing ideas on the subject. If you concur or disagree to ideas raised here I would sincerely hope that we all cherish the values of positive, polite and good-humoured discussion which characterises our democracy.
