The map layout is Liverpool centric, with the largest central zone depicting the city center and around this, the area most people from your survey consider as ‘Liverpool’. The next zone is the remainder of Merseyside, which have a sufficiently strong local identity to dominate perceptions in these areas, for example Wirral,Southport and St. Helens. Surrounding Merseyside is the 5 counties which make up the North West region, around which is wrapped England and the home countries. Our Liverpool centric map works suprisingly well in allowing us to distort Britain for our purposes but still allowing it to be immediately recognizable in overall shape.

Outside Britain the rest of the world is arranged in accordance with the direction to the countries from Liverpool, with ocean areas much contracted. This allows for us to maximize the potential space to display Liverpool’s international connections while preserving a reasonable geographic legibility to the presentation.

Format media subject to consultation and feedback:

The country and district zone background to be either of cut stone with ‘pointing’ on support board depicting ‘sea areas’ or of ‘white woods’ from local trees. Theme lines and details are laminated into the glass panel in front. The initial impression would be of a rather unpromising wall, which would reveal its logic and art as the viewer looks into it. This option underlines the rich heritage just beneath the surface of what at first sight is just another provincial city. The overlaid details (on glazing) reflect the transient nature of human settlement and activities in the ancient area (stone)

Dimensions

Work to fit the freestanding wall ( 3m wide by 3.5 m tall). Much of the 1m floorspace available in front of the wall will be taken by the interior workings of the piece.
