Having investigated various options for controlling the carriage connection interface, I propose the arrangement illustrated below for highway use. This incorporates the following features:

Picture
  • Separation of the cornering assembly away from the interface, so that the extreme rear of the mother vehicle can corner together with the transfer vehicle. This simplifies the interface technology.
  • Use each of the maximum available width of the vehicle at the interface to facilitate the rapid transfer or passengers across it.
  • An asymmetrical arrangement that the rear of the mother vehicle [see yellow area], allowing greater floor space for those queuing to disembark.
  • Siting of the driver console in the position to allow direct surveillance and supervision of embarkation procedure in the transfer vehicle.
  • A mothercar door assembly, which facilitates safe vehicle connection by the sliding doors which do not compromise the space available for passenger transfer during engagement.
  • Integration of a battery carousel to allow for the rapid interchange of energy during vehicle engagement.
  • Mounting for electronic navigation devices such as the vehicle closing-distance monitor units, inter vehicle communication devices [to relay information from the mother vehicle on its anticipated velocity changes for synchronous breaking, battery charge status, anticipated connection time etc.]

The Transfer vehicle incorporates design features to facilitate the rapid transfer of people across into the mover during the engagement time:

    • People are queued to one side of the drivers cab, so that an orderly and unambiguous passage [the syndrome of " You first. " " No, after you thanks " ] across the vehicles interface is facilitated.
    • The Transfer vehicle driver can monitor passenger flows and deter disruptive or anti social behaviour that may otherwise create delays
    • The design shown allows simultaneous passage of those boarding and those disembarking from the Mother car, with clear separation between the two groups.
    • There is space allocated specifically for those waiting to disembark who may otherwise block the main Mother car walkway at times when larger numbers are disembarking the Mother car.
    • An intercom system to forewarn those disembarking on the next Transfer vehicle to proceed to the disembarkation area before engagement time so that people are ready and waiting to disembark.
    • Clear and well advertised rules warning against loitering in the Clearway, disregarding disembarkation announcements or anti social behaviour published on tickets and on vehicle wallspace. This might be supported by `conditions of use clause` on tickets backed up by sanctions for non compliance.
    • A moving walkway at the entrance to the Mother car and Transfer vehicle might further assist in ensuring rapid passenger throughput.
